Rumah Tenun Magelang is a business unit under PT Retota Sakti, a company that has been producing Indonesian natural fiber woven fabrics since 1988. Rumah Tenun Magelang itself was inaugurated in 2002 and has been in operation ever since. Rumah Tenun Magelang sources raw natural fiber materials from across Indonesia, including kudzu fiber from North Sumatra, abaca fiber from Talaud, North Sulawesi, and vetiver fiber from Gunung Kidul.
Currently, Rumah Tenun Magelang is diversifying natural fiber products into wallpapers, which have been exported to the United States and the United Kingdom, as well as carpets, wall hangings, interior products like cushion covers and table runners, and fashion products such as pouches and bags. The initial market focus, almost 100% export, has now shifted due to the changing preferences of Indonesian consumers who appreciate high-quality local products.
The growing range of Retota products also contributes to empowering the community around Rumah Tenun. Currently, over 2,000 residents near Rumah Tenun Retota, mostly women, are involved as partners in preparing the products.
To introduce natural fiber weaving to the public, Rumah Tenun Magelang now offers limited opportunities for the community to visit. Visitors can observe the various fiber plants used, the raw material manufacturing process, and the weaving process. The hope is that witnessing the entire process will inspire the community to turn the available fiber materials into beautiful, high-value products with export quality.

Rumah Tenun Magelang has created employment opportunities for over 2,000 women in the vicinity, contributing to the local community's economic empowerment. The establishment is engaged in the production of high-quality handwoven fabrics crafted from natural fibers. These fabrics are subsequently exported to various countries, showcasing the traditional craftsmanship and cultural richness of Indonesia on the global stage.
